Austria guidance

Everything starts with the right programme.

Admission in Austria is institution-led. The smartest route is to identify the right programme first, then build the application and residence plan around its actual requirements.

01
Eligibility
Match your previous education to the programme.
02
Programme
Check language, entrance and academic requirements.
03
Application
Prepare legalised documents and submit correctly.
04
Residence
Plan funds, accommodation and the student residence permit.
Study routes

Choose your academic route.

Austria has universities, technical universities, universities of applied sciences and other higher-education institutions. Requirements depend heavily on the chosen programme.

Undergraduate

Bachelor's in Austria

Build your undergraduate route through an Austrian university or university of applied sciences, subject to institution-specific admission rules.

✓Equivalent secondary-school leaving qualification and programme eligibility
✓German or English language proof according to the chosen programme
✓Some programmes have entrance examinations or selection procedures
✓Indian applicants must check country-specific document and legalisation requirements
✓Admission is decided by the institution — there is no single nationwide percentage rule
Bachelor's

What Class XII applicants should know.

Austria does not use one universal “12+1” rule like the German pathway described on our Germany page. For Austria, the relevant question is whether your Indian school-leaving qualification is considered equivalent and whether the specific institution accepts you under its published rules.

University-specific assessment

For example, the University of Vienna currently states that applicants with an Indian secondary-school leaving certificate need at least 85% of the maximum possible marks for the application to be processed, with individual review. This is a University of Vienna rule — not a nationwide Austria rule.

01

School qualification

Equivalent secondary-school leaving qualification that permits higher-education study.

02

Language

German or English proof according to the chosen Bachelor's programme.

03

Entrance procedures

Some programmes have entrance examinations, aptitude tests or selection procedures.

04

Indian documents

Follow the institution's current legalisation, translation and country-specific document instructions.

05

University of Vienna

From WS 2026/27, VFS competence check applies to applicants from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh before admission application.

06

Final decision

Admission is decided by the institution after its academic and formal assessment.

01

Profile

Education, subject, grades, language and intake.

02

Shortlist

Find programmes and verify official requirements.

03

Apply

Submit the complete application to the institution.

04

Residence

Prepare funds, accommodation, insurance and permit.

Application

Apply directly to the institution.

Austria's central Study in Austria guidance states that applications are sent to the university, university college or university of applied sciences. Institutions organise admission themselves, so the exact portal, documents, deadlines and fees depend on the programme.

Deadlines

General university closing dates are listed as 5 September for winter and 5 February for summer, but programme-specific deadlines can be earlier.

Documents

Typical documents include passport, school/degree certificates, transcripts and language proof, with legalisation/translation where required.

Selection

Entrance examinations and selection procedures can apply, especially for medicine, arts and many UAS programmes.

Public university costs

Budget for tuition + living costs.

For third-country students holding a Residence Permit–Student, public universities generally charge €751.92 tuition per semester. The compulsory ÖH contribution and student accident insurance is currently €25.20 per semester.

Residence Permit – Student

Plan the Austrian residence process early.

For studies longer than six months, Indian students generally need a Residence Permit–Student. The Austrian Embassy in New Delhi says the application is generally made in person before travel and recommends applying at least three months before intended entry.
